This historical drama tells the true story of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man who is abducted and sold into slavery until he was eventually able to free himself after twelve years. The Faculty Lounge blog has a nice post discussing court decisions involving slavery. By focusing on the disproportionate amount of African-Americans (and other people of color) in US jails, the film discusses US history following the abolishment of slavery and the extent to which the exception in the 13th amendment for "punishment for crime" has substituted the initial form of abolished slavery into one that has seen Jim Crow laws, segregation, and mass incarceration as a new form of slavery. A courtroom drama/comedy where Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, as husband and wife, are on opposite ends of a criminal prosecution where she defends a women charged with murdering her husband with Spencer Tracy prosecuting the case.
